The first ever sunny day for the hill climb in living memory brought out a good field of riders including ladies and juniors.After meeting at the Auldhouse Cross the show was off and running.
The freewheel was the first competition to be decided on the day. Defending champ, David Turner had been in training for around 3 weeks for this but in the end was to curse missing out on that extra roll n sausage at breakfast. Young Eilidh Meikle was the first rider off and found a very good turn of speed to set an early benchmark. Ali Bean and David Aitken produced the next big turn which took them well up the hill. Colin Gillespie, a previous winner, however trundled well past their marks with only David Turner to go. Sadly David could not reproduce last years form? and was denied by a good 20 yards. Colin Gillespie was a worthy champion.
Now onto the main event, the hill climb up Ardoch Rigg. This year there would be a new champion as last years winner, Peter Duncan could not make the championship. Again young Eilidh Meikle was the first rider off and did extremely well to complete the tough event. With a slight headwind the climb as ever was going to be hard. Any rider timed at about 3 minutes was in with a shout at the trophy.The first rider near that time was Gregor Cameron with a 3.17.26. However Colin Gillespie proved he could go uphill just as fast as down with an excellent 3.06.79. In the end the competition boiled down to 2 riders, Alan Graham and Colin Meikle. Alan's time of 3.02.87 was the quickest so far and Colin would have to pull out all the stops to beat it. Well he did that and more, Colin's time of 2.30.62 blew everyones time away and proved a time worthy of a hill climb champion. Colin's time was the only time under 3 minutes on the day and made him the Hill Climb Champion 2012.
